The Evolution of the Corporation The Evolution of the Corporation In a capitalist society where the growth and power of corporations are ever evolving it is critical to determine the effects and consequences this evolution brings upon the business world. The Stockholder Theory maintains that managers should act merely as agents to the stockholder and only serve their interests-the maximization of profits (45). Milton Friedmans argument being, they are the owners of the business, and hence they should be entitled to all profits (45). Although this simple profit-motive concept may achieve the desired result, and address all of the interests of the stakeholders it lacks compassion that is so prevalent, and in my opinion superior,†¦show more content†¦If law is the publics agency for translating morality into explicit social guidelines and practices it clearly illustrates the lack of morality imposed upon society as a result of the Stockholders Theory. According to John Stuart Mill most persons, and perhaps all, have a basic moral sensitivity to the needs of their fellow human beings (17). This was so prominently displayed when Southeast Asia was devastated by the recent Tsunami disaster that touched the hearts of both the public and corporate society. Hundreds of millions of dollars were donated by the corporate sector to provide those misfortunate people with aid. No doubt some of those corporations were displaying true social responsibility while others were merely acting the part in order to simulate this appearance. This, in my opinion, is the underlying difference in the two theories I am presently critiquing. Clearly Freemans Stakeholder theory is superior in this regard. With such massive profits accumulated by large corporations those that decide to bear social responsibility can significantly improve society as a whole. Immanual Kant proposes that persons should be treated as ends and never purely as means to the ends of others (22). Free speech is necessary for society to function—all speech, even the voice you don’t agree with, or think is offensive. Last week, students who attend UW made headlines for the creation of a violent video beheading a cop to promote their clothing line. The argument is not about director Eneale Pickett’s ideology; it is whether or not he had a right—free speech—to do so. For both liberals and conservatives, free speech is the â€Å"right† of every single individual living in the land of the red, white, and blue. Well, as long as the individual believes, agrees, and says the same thing as they do. News flash, that’s not what the first amendment is about. And interestingly, liberals are even worst about it than conservatives. Why is free speech suddenly so controversial? Blame universities. According to a study done by Econ Journal Watch in 2016, liberals vastly outnumber conservative professors. They looked into the faculty at 40 leading universities and found out that Democrats outnumber Republicans 3,623 to 314—a ratio of 11  ½ to one (UW was not part of the survey). This past May, right leaning Young America’s Foundation conducted research into the commencement speeches and found that the top 100 national colleges ranked by U.S News and World Report colleges favored liberals (45 to 4). However, the number is a bit skewed because not all of the top 100 Universities were included, 29 speakers were in the middle of the ideology spectrum, and 22 schools had a diverse set of speakers or none at all.
